Buying insurance: Do you need to work with an agent?

The insurance industry is considered among the most complicated in the world, but thanks to today´s technology buying insurance is relatively easy. But just because buying insurance is easy doesn’t mean that understanding or using your policy will be! An insurance agent is your best ally and could save you time and money by preventing you from making a bad decision regarding the policy you were planning on buying. Here are some reasons why you should work with an agent:

The myth of the price difference

Some people think that buying directly from the insurance company will save them some money. An insurance policy will cost you the same if you buy it through an agent or directly with the insurance provider. Insurance agents receive a commission from the premium of the policy you pay for, so there’s no additional fees charged by an agent

Terminology

This industry uses both legal and insurance terminology that may be unfamiliar. An insurance agent can help you easily understand the policy and address any questions and concerns you may have.

Right Coverage

Did you know that in many cases claims aren’t paid because the policy didn’t offer certain benefits clients thought they had? A good insurance agent take the time to understand your needs and find the right policy for you.

Fine print & vague definitions

Before buying a policy, a good insurance agent will also tell you everything you need to know up front, including the most important aspects of the fine print and any vague definitions of coverage

Translation

While some companies offer documents in English, most companies in Mexico offer them only in Spanish. When you buy the policy through your bank, dealership, or directly from the insurance company, do you know what you are buying? What you are covered for and what not? If you have questions, who will answer them for you? That is the role of a good agent

Claims assistance

It is during a claim when you’ll need all help and assistance you can get. A good insurance agent will walk you through the process to make it smoother. You can choose to handle the claim on your own, but it’s a process you’re not familiar with, and in many cases will involve Spanish speakers. The process is time consuming, and can get frustrating if you are also dealing with a health condition or recovering from an accident. Insurance agents are your best allies when shopping for insurance. Be sure you do business through one licensed in Mexico, as they have full support from the Mexican insurance authorities and government to properly represent you and look after your best interests.
