Quintana Roo: Are you ready for the changes in the vehicle insurance law?

Effective September 12, 2018, all drivers in the state of Quintana Roo will be required to carry valid liability insurance.

It may surprise you to know that liability insurance is not currently required in the state but effective September 12, that will change thanks to Article 180 in the Ley de Movilidad (Mobility Law). The law states:

“Motorized vehicles of private use that circulate in the state of Quintana Roo, must have a current civil liability insurance covering at least the damages that may be caused to third parties on their person and / or their property by driving the vehicle; in the terms established for that purpose in the applicable regulations”

Violation of the law will be considered a misdemeanor and will be subject to a fine between 25 and 300 times the average daily salary in the state. This means a fine could range from approximately $2,105 MXN to $24,180 MXN.

The liability insurance requirement will be in place for all vehicles, including motorcycles.
