Hurricane Season 2018 is Here! Are You Protected?

The hurricane season on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts runs through November 30. Make sure you are ready in the event of an emergency with this helpful list from Guardian Insurance MX.

We are in the middle of Hurricane Season 2018 on both coasts of Mexico and even though it has been a relatively calm season so far, we still have a long way to go. Hurricane season on both coasts runs until November 30 and according to the National Weather Service the peak months for hurricanes are August, September, and October. So, how can you make sure that you, your loved ones and your property are protected if a hurricane should head our way?

It is important to note that you should not wait until the last minute before purchasing property insurance. Why? Because insurance companies will not write a policy for hurricane coverage if a storm is forecasted.

The first step in making a comprehensive hurricane plan is to gather as much information as possible about the area you live in. Do you live in an evacuation zone? Is your area prone to flooding, strong winds, or storm surge? It is also important to stay up-to-date with Mexico’s national weather service, Servicio Meteorologico Nacional (National Meteorological Services).

Next is to keep a contact list of important services is your area like:

  • Local law enforcement
  • Public Safety/Fire and Rescue
  • Hospitals
  • Red Cross
  • TV/Radio Stations (Weather Apps)
  • Property Insurance Agent

It is also important to know where to go in case of an evacuation or have a second location to stay at in the case that your home is not safe enough during a hurricane.

Make sure you have water proof container to store important documents and devices and a Disaster Supply Kit ready that consists of:

  • Canned food
  • Bottled Water
  • Flash lights
  • Batteries
  • Battery powered radio
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help

During a Hurricane stay safe by taking the following steps:

  • Follow emergency service announcements
  • Stay dry
  • Don’t go out

After a storm, if you were evacuated do not go back to your home unless local authorities confirm that your area is safe to return to and remember recovering from a natural disaster is a gradual process, and not is lost when you are well prepared and covered.
